Converting a 24 speed to a 10 speed and dumping the front derailluer.
Hello all
I am looking into converting a 2011 Trek Mamba commuter bike into a 10 speed and removing the front derailleur. I could potentially have a bike shop do this but I'm also considering doing it myself.
The model I have currently uses a 3 gear spider in the front and I'm told I can just ditch the upper and lower gears and save the crank as it is. However, I'm not entirely sure what all I'd need for the rear as well as the shifter.
Any insight into a project like this?

You need a 10-speed cassette, chain and shifter. Derailer is likely to be OK.
Thing is, the drivetrain on your bike is made to derail. Remove the front derailer and you may well end up having to use some sort of chain guide instead.

You could use the front derailleur as a chain guide. Just use limit screws to lock it in place.

Not quite sure what you are trying to accomplish. What is your intended purpose for the bike and why a 1 x 10 drivetrain? I'm not sure that a 10-sp chain is going to run properly on a chainring designed for 7/8-sp. As mentioned above, single chainrings are designed differently than chainrings for a double or triple. It might work, but you might have to have some kind of chain guide to keep the chain from climbing off the chainring in your top and bottom gears. If you ditch the outer chainring you are also going to need shorter chainring bolts. Are you planning to use the 44 or the 32 chainring?
IMHO you'll be throwing money into a can of worms without much, if any, end benefit.
