Need Cantilever recommendations.

Hello Bikeforums members. I am looking for cantis for my hybrid that my neighbor gave me. It runs 29er tires. I picked 40s for it and am having a hard time finding cantis with proper clearance. They seem to stop just shy at 35 or 37ish. This bike will be my rain bike. What do you recommend for 40's and up?. Thanks.

I run Tektro CR-720's with Kool Stop Salmon pads and Problem Solvers Wide cable carriers on my hybrid with 700x42 Michelin City Tires; there is plenty of clearance and they stop fine.

I was running the same setup an a rigid MTB with 26 x 47s; I recently replaced the front with Magura HS-33 hydraulic rim brakes, just because I wanted to try them.

You might consider Maguras as well, which have TONS of clearance. great feel and insane stopping power. Not cantis but great brakes.

Tektro CR720 + koolstop salmon here as well, no special carriers or anything, and I run very wide tires: Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 700x50.

Yes. CR720s have the same cable pull as road side pull and road center pull brakes. CR720 accept regular pads, not canti (aka post) pads.

Thanks everyone for your responses. You've saved me a great deal of headaches since I'm fairly new to Cantilevers.

Mini-v.

I experimented with Tektro RX-5 (cheap, 85mm arm), and they worked great, so I sprang for TRP CX8.4.

I'll never go back to cantis.

Mini-Vs will not fit over 40mm and larger tires. They'll barely clear 32mm tires.

My CX8.4s clear my 32mm tires with margin to spare. Plus some PB fenders when the weather takes a turn.

And once you try a brake that actually stops you, and doesn't howl like a banshee, and doesn't cause your fork to shudder uncontrollably (while also not stopping you), it's really hard to go back. Just sayin'.

I know it's not a proper answer to your OP, but another suggestion to switch to Vs and never touch Cantis again. You'll need to switch your brake levers to V-compatible mode if they have such an option, or get new levers. But seriously, V is the superior brake.

So you're saying I have no reason to swap out the CR720's on my cyclocross bike. Good to know! ;-)

No knock on mini-v's, but I've been content with CR720's. Stopping power was decent even with the crummy stock pads. (Kool-Stops are definitely an upgrade.) I personally haven't run into a problem with fork shudder, but if I did, that's pretty easy to solve with a fork crown cable hanger. And I haven't had a problem with squeal on any of my canti-equipped bikes. (The old Peugeot with Mafac Racers, though...)

Pretty much describes my experience. 720s with Kool-Stops give me plenty of stopping power with excellent modulation. Brakes are good enough that I am as comfortable riding my canti-equipped bike on fast group rides as my road bike with dual-pivot calipers. Mini-Vs are also a fine choice, but they are not the only way to get good braking on a bike designed for cantis.

It's interesting to hear some people defending V's. Everyone I come across swears that Canti's are superior. Regardless I'll be using brifters with my geared bikes so Canti it is. Thanks for adding to the discussion.
