    Tip for repairing old axle grease seals

    The rubber seals on my old Nashbar hub seals were so brittle with age they disintegrated when removed to repack the wheel bearings. Naturally the size (30x16x3 mm) is unobtainable so I borrowed an old technology from my British motorcycle mechanic days - felt. Felt is a great sealing material with a wicking yet non-scoring action and keeps road grit out just fine. It is easily obtainable at the hardware store in several thicknesses as padding to go under furniture. All you need to do is punch out (or cut) the correct shape and glue it in the old metal seal housing after cleaning out all the old rubber part. RTV silicone worked fine for me.

    You got that right Ah Lucas, the great Prince of Darkness. And how about the torque setting for British cycle threads - tighten till it strips, then back off half a turn!

    Hehe- few of us recall when any good mechanic had to keep at least three (four when Japan standardized their own metrics)sets of spanners and sockets.
