old bottom bracket cup removal question - tool?

hi folks,

can you someone please point me to the right tool for removing these old cups? i haven't seen this style before. i tried kludging using my pin spanner, but i can tell my pins are going to break before something is going to give.

for whatever it is worth, this is on an 83 specialized expedition.

thanks!

It takes a wrench spline adapter from the photo I thought it might be an adjustable cup and cone at first glance.

yeah it is adjustable on both sides, which is weird. the ring is off on both sides, using park's ring spanner (HCW-5).

do you happen to have a link to something you know would work?

that is to say: i'm sure it is adjustable cup and cone. it's an old bottom bracket. it looks like the newer shimano octolink stuff but that's just a superficial resemblance.

EDIT: i'm an idiot. it's a suntour cartridge BB. you were right. learn something new every day!

PS. got it out with WD-40 and the pin spanner.

I wonder if this tool will work. The number of notches and their size seem to match: Park Tool Co. » BBT-18 : Bottom Bracket Tool : Bottom Bracket

that looks pretty good to me...

so john allen at sheldon's site suggests it is the fr-6 that removes the 8 notch ST BBs. but i have an fr-6 and this is clearly not correct...

The Park FR-6 freewheel remover with 4 notches
fits this old SunTour bottom bracket with 8 notches.
Thanks to Cory Heintz for the information.

If it's in good shape, why not?

N.B. I've found that Phil mounting rings fit on these SunTour cartridges, which gives you a wide variety of thread options and easily sourced tools to install and remove the cartridge.

If the cup isn't galled in place, the Park "yellow" pin tool can work:

Would the same tool work on a Suntour freehub to disassemble the internal bearings (not the axle bearings).

Asking for a friend.

Not sure. I don't have one of those to try.

Never saw the yellow tool, only the green and red on their website
https://www.parktool.com/search?q=Pin+spanner

Is it a smaller diameter pin size?

Different shape. Rectangular rather than round:

Thanks, wonder why they no longer manufacture it. I know there was also a discontinued blue and black version

Not much demand, I guess. The yellow tool is only of limited use, as it is not strong enough to remove a seized cup.

N.B. The blue tool had inward-facing prongs. I don't have the black tool.

I believe that yellow pin spanner was meant for use with the rectangular slots on bottom bracket cups for older one piece cranks. It was an accidental fit for those Suntour bottom brackets. I've got one of those bottom brackets and have used an adjustable pin spanner to remove it in the past. Awkward, but it works.

FYI, there's 2 eBay listings for 3 tool lots of Park pin spanners right now. One with the red, blue and yellow spanners; the other with the green, blue and black spanners. They've been relisted several times.

Yes, I saw them, thanks. Really just interested in the yellow tool as our volunteer shop works on a lot of those older on-piece cranks
