My floor pump suddenly started letting air out as I pump air in.
I tried this on four tires, with the same result.

Is this a common problem as floor pumps get older or am I just in need of retraining?

It is very simple - the washers in the air chuck need to be replaced. Various manufacturers sell them separately for a 30 second overhaul.
