Oh I didn't think you were being judgmental at all and I appreciate the help.
I have raised the bar to $350, but I'm still concerned about the dirt shoulders and the tires. I'm going to take a drive out to check the roads and see if I can bypass the dangerous parts even though it will add quite a bit of miles to the trip.
There are also a lot of dirt bike trails, but then I'd be back to Mountain bikes with much more travel time.

Now that's an idea. Cool!

Leave it up to the wife to spoil things. She just found out about my plans of where I was planning on riding and said there is no way because she would have an ambulance follow me.

It turns out that the place I want to ride to is actually 35 miles one way and not 15. After a bit of arguing we checked it on Google map and dam I hate it when she’s right. LOL

Sometimes I feel like Rodney Dangerfield - "I don't get no respect" LOL

So I guess I have to change my plans.

When I used to ride years ago, dogs were a problem and now there will not be any dogs were I'm riding. But there are coyotes. I've never heard of them going after bikes, but that might also be a concern.
A can of bear spray will fix that. Be advised that if you spray a human you may have legal battles ahead.

So I just could not believe the Goggle miles of 35 miles because I’ve been driving out to my spot in the desert for 20 yrs so I drove it this morning and it is actually 16.5 miles.

My original mileage estimate was pretty close, but the road shoulders are worse than I thought with plenty of crosses marking were people have been killed on the road. I also forgot about the Big Rigs hauling alfalfa and onions along with oversize farm equipment traveling the road.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to change my plans. It’s just not a bike friendly place and my only option is to load the bike up and drive someplace else which kind of defeats the whole idea.

Anyway I’ve completely lost interest in the Huffy mountain bike and will probably buy a road bike. The neighborhood kid who cuts everyone’s lawn is interested in the bike and I told him if he puts it back together he can have it.
