tube just popped

I just rode 6 miles today, came home. Was drinking some water with my bike about 6 feet away and the tube completely burst. I have no idea why! Im running Ritchey tom slicks inflated to 75psi (this was on the rear). I see no glass or anything inside and this wasnt just like a little flat. This was a BURST. The tube is practicly split in two and it blew the tire off!!
Any ideas of why?

Old dry rotted tube
Rubber components exposed to alcohol (from rim cleaning)
Parked bike on hot pavement, in direct sunlight

Heres what i do:
With a dry paper towel, run it around the rim a few times to break chips and get big stuff off.
With a towel soaked with alcohol run it around again getting the fine stuff off.
and again real quick with the dry.

Takes all of 5 minutes

Enjoy

well yea but this is a new tube. I dont soak it to the point where the alcohol is dripping off. But so its moist enough so it picks up dirt and crap.

Could also be that the tube was pinched somehow and that the friction of riding caused it to expand a bit (leading to its explosion after your ride). This seems somewhat less likely (explosions like that tend to happen when you're putting air in). That's always a fun one though.

When you replace the tube, check to be sure it's squarely within the tire. It may be that the tube didn't blow the tire off the rim, but rather, that the tire was never over the rim correctly, and that the tube was between the tire and the rim, and consequently blew.

Good luck!

It it blew the tire off the rim it was not seated properly. Make sure the tube is completly under the tire.

Could've have been a bad tube.

well I installed another tube. So far nothing has gone wrong but I will see. I checked the rim tape and it was fine, there was no folds or anything in the tube. I found that odd. When i said that thing exploded, i mean it. When i was taking it out i found at least 30 fragments of rubber.

I confess! I had a root put on your tube.

Reminds me of the time my Dad had a tire explode. He had a bicycle shop and was delivering a 10 speed. He stopped off on the way at a drive thru bank. Just as he entered the drive tru, the tire blew inside his van. Caused quite some excitement at the bank.

Happened to me at night in my dorm room. I must have put too much air in too fast (I have a 10-speed with non-hooked rims). I could see the tire coming off the rim, the tube exploded just as I was thinking "that doesn't look good." At least it wasn't totally unexpected. Sure did freak out my neighbors though!
