You may need glue (I used double-sided sticky tape on the inside of the brake track) to prevent them from sliding on the rim and tearing the valve out.
They're not a good option on rims with a big internal depth, as much of the tire will disappear between the brake tracks, which will make you very prone to pinch/snakebite flats.
I have done this to get back home after a flat (actually I donated the sew up to a friend who rode w/o any flat fixing stuff) BUT I would never suggest riding a sew up on a clincher rim as a first choice. Andy.
