Weird ticking from rear wheel

I'm getting a weird ticking from my rear wheel. Sounds almost like a skipping ball bearing.

So, I dismounted the wheel and ran the bearings - they're fine and smooth. But still, with every rotation - tick, tick, tick.

It's not the hub - seems to be coming from the rim. And this is with the wheel off the bike!

Thoughts? Ideas?

Could be a little piece of debris rattling around in the rim channel. Next time you remove the tire see if you can shake it out.

Could also be the valve stem not perfectly lined up. This is an issue for me on deep rim wheels.
