Would this work?

I'm in the process of purchasing bits and bobs to cheaply upgrade my bike.

It came with non series Microshift group set, which to be honest has been just fine. However, I would prefer to change it all over to shimano for peace of mind.

I've just bought some 3500 Sora shifters off of eBay and have seen an FC-R565 chain set for sale at a very good price, cheaper than the sora. So my question is, would the shifter and chain set work together? If so, what BB would I need? If anyone knows?

Many thanks.

The shifters "speeds" need to match the cassette and chain. All 8 speed, or all 9 speed, or all 10 speed. Generally speaking, if they match, then " it will work".
I've heard good things about Microshift, so make sure you're getting a real upgrade for your money & time.

9 spd shifters work best with 9spd cassette assuming Shimano/Microshift/SRAM. Cranks, chains and deraillers are a bit less persnickety and an 8 spd or 10 spd crank/chain/derailler will sub
satisfactorily with a 9spd shifter/cassette, at a one step difference. You need a BB4600 bottom bracket for your 565.

Thanks. To be honest, the Microshift stuff is fine. I dislike the fact that the gears need adjusting quite a lot and I've only done 200~ miles since buying it. whether it's a real upgrade or not remains to be seen, I'm sure I could revert quite easily in the future.

The shifters are a double 9 speed, the shimano info states that the crank is a super narrow HG for 10 speed. No idea what that means, but was aware that 'any' crank would be fine as long as shifters matched rear cassette. It has the same number of teeth as the sora set so no idea why it wouldn't fit?

A I also right in thinking I'd need a 10 speed front mech, or would a 9 speed be fine. After reading sheldon's page, it seems a little cloudy over this fact.

The frequent early adjustments are more likely a function of the cables "stretching" or bedding-in to the housings, poor housing preparation or too-coarse adjustment than of the shifters or derailleurs wearing. I have had good results with Microshift stuff, the quality seems equal or better (IMO) at the price point, and in installation and use find it indistinguishable from Shimano.

You are wasting money and time. Functionally, Microshift works just as well as other brands.

Absolutely. Totally agree.

If they were Microsoft group parts I would keep them. The fact is I no longer want or need a triple and would like to go to a double. i understand I could do this with the micro shift components, but to be honest, I'd rather have a double specific shifter and build around that. Baring in mind that I have own brand brakes, sun race cassette etc. things need updating a little.

I was about to give a similar reply. Minor adjustments are usually needed during the first few hundred miles.
