Fulcrum Racing 1, broken spoke - will this be a nightmare to fix?

I bought this wheelset in 2009 - it's been a delight and never been more than 1/4mm out of true until this morning when I discovered a snapped spoke. I'm trying to obtain a black replacment spoke for the drive-side of this rear wheel. Unfortunately the Racing 1 (my wheel) has been discontinued and parts are harder to find, but I suspect that the Racing Zero, a higher-end wheel might use the exact same spokes. Nobody seems to be able to confim this. I'm in the UK, and looking to get back on the road ASAP.

This is what the wheel looks like:

Other than being the wrong colour, would this work - if somebody could confirm that the product is right I might just go and buy it. I don't really care about the colour mismatch - I just need to ride!!!:

This looks like the exact right product but is out of stock:

Alternativly, is a five year old rear wheel worth repairing? I've had plenty of good use out of this. I'm heavy (93kg) and I ride long distance every day. Do you think I''d be better off with a Shimano Ultrega wheel? I never race but I commute and do long-distance trips for leasure. Reliability is important to me.

If one spoke broke and it wasn't because of an accident or mechanical mishap, it may be that others are nearing the end of their service life too and there will be others to replace. If you have a lot of miles (KM?) on the wheels and parts are difficult to fine, perhaps a replacement is justified.

An Ultegra wheel would be a good choice IF you are currently using a Shimano cassette and compatible shifters/rear derailleur. If your cassette, etc. are Campy, you won't be able to use a Shimano hub.

I always go by the theory that one spoke doesn't mean anything, 2 is a warning and 3 means time to go. As long as you're shopping spokes, plan ahead and buy one or two more for a future contigency. No reason for 3 total, since you'd be chucking the wheel.

If the wheel follows typical breakage patterns, the second spoke to break will take a while, how long varies and is hard to predict. But the interval 2nd to third will be considerably less than the interval 1st to second. I quit at 3 because the intervals continue to get much shorter.

I didn't see a broken spoke in the pics, I did see a spoke with a separated nipple. Did the nipple pull out of the rim or was it taken apart to show how it's connected?

All 11 speed cassettes are compatible across brands. Unfortunately op has a 10 speed cassette.

Also op try emailing fulcrum. They're pretty good about getting back to you and being helpful.

Yes, 11-speed cassette spacing is nearly identical across brands but the spline patterns are not. And, as you noted, 10-speed cassette spacing is not cross-compatible and Shiftmates are no longer made.

Forgive me for the hijack, but this seems like an opportunity to raise an issue. In today's world of boutique wheels (Fulcrum and their competitors haven't been around all that long), it seems to me that when a wheelset gets to this point or is taco'ed for some reason, that everything becomes "throwaway". Gone are the days when the Campagnolo Record rear hub with the jewelry finish and ultra smooth mechanicals was cut out of such a broken wheel and rebuilt with a replacement rim. I don't even know if it is possible to rebuild a wheelset when only the hubs are left, but surely it is price prohibitive.

So what do you do with all this broken equipment? Worse than toner cartridges and K-Cups?

Yes. What I mean was if the OP wanted an Ultegra-hubbed wheel he could just buy the cheaper 11 speed Shimano cassette and use it with his Campy setup.

And I did not know the ShiftMate was discontinued!
