headseat locknut question
Why does the lip exist on the locknut of threaded headsets? Why would you not just have a stand nut threaded the entire way through, thereby allowing you to have any length fork steerer tube you want. It might look kind of stupid to see threads coming out the head tube of a bike, but what purpose does the lip of the locknut serve? True, but to specifically fabricate a locknut with that lip seems there's some purpose to having it there. Otherwise why not just use off the shelf standard nut.

Yeah, in fact you can even get (and many headsets come with) a seal that sits under the top of the nut and forms a tight fit with the steam to keep out water.
