Does a New Cassette Need Lubing?

I am never sure whether or not to lube a rear cassette. I have read both opinions on this one. I have just fitted a new Shimano cassette and did not lube the sprockets with anything. Should I?

I usually put a thin sheen of water resistant grease on the splines as a rust inhibitor. The cassette tends to pick up a little lube from the chain no matter what you do. And since the chain/sprocket isn't a sliding interface, it doesn't need much.

Do you use a petroleum-based lube on your chain? Just reapply the lube. Plenty of it will spread to the cassette, and you should be fine.

I never lube cassette or rings, but only my chain. I try to keep the rest of the drivetrain dry, but the oil spreads anyway and I figure that's plenty.

You all got to be kidding me, right?
Your cassette will be lube'd in short order.

Since it is a new chain anyhoo, I reckon that as has been suggested, that it will pick up some grease anyway.

Absolutely not. Any oil that gets on the cassette or chainrings will just attract dirt.

You do want to lightly lube the splines on the freehub body if it's steel to protect it from rust. There is no need whatsoever to lube the cogs themselves.
