best portable pump?
Looking for suggestions for a good portable tire pump. The one I've got takes a really long time with hundreds of pumps to get slight inflation.

For sure my Topeak Turbo Morph. Works really well and is nicely made. Worth the little extra price (admittedly I bought mine at a garage sale for 3 bucks..)

I use and recommend the Topeak Road Morph G. It can be used for Presta or Schrader valves, has a hose to help avoid pulling and damage to valve stems and a reasonably accurate gauge. Of course it is no match for a floor pump for efficiency but that's the price you pay for portability. There is also a Mountain Morph which has a somewhat larger barrel for larger, lower-pressure tires; no gauge, though. My Road Morph works fine on larger MTB and hybrid tires as well as road tires.

I really like my Blackburn Mammoth Anyvalve mini pump, I bought it on sale at EMS for like, $12 and it has yet to fail me. Takes me equal time to use that for my floor pump, plus it works for schrader or presta valves.

+1 you want a pump with a hose, like the Topeak. Miles better.
Aside from eliminating the possibility of bent or broken presta valves, it's a hell of a lot easier to pump when you're not trying to avoid that.

One more vote for the Zefal HPX - I own 2 of them. I also own a Zefal HP - the HPX is better, because it directly mounts into a frame with a pump peg, without needing an umbrella clip.

Bob- I BTD. Having owned many and used more then a few Silcas (most all with the Campy steel head, the only way to ride a Silca Impero) I feel that after you get past the lousy (for a hand pumping's wiggling) Campy chuck there's the lack of easy compression. Granted for a strong guy watching the group go up the road having a large volume probably makes sense to just get back in the saddle in less minutes but these days those guys are running CO2, not pumps. I found that the compression stroke of the Zefals (Starting with the silver/red/blue Competition w/o a chuck lock and continuing on with the HP and HPX) was always easier to compress the full amount. As well as the chuck, with it's simple lock, was less leak prone.
I will say this for Silcas, they look far sweeter in paint then a Zefal, and they will get you back up and riding.

I can't believe the Zefal HPX is still in production. They perfected it a long time ago, and somehow I assumed they stopped making it. I'm glad to know I can still get one. I've never used a better frame pump.

I am a huge fan of the Topeak Road Morph. It works similarly to a floor pump just a little smaller so it takes a little more time. However it is powerful enough to go up to 110psi (and pop the damn tube on my Cilo with new tires, tubes and rim strips on an old rim that probably cannot take that kind of pressure anymore)

I am not even really sure if they still make them. The darn things last almost forever. My newest one is about 10 years old and looks a bit different from the older ones. when I am out on a ride with friends, if someone has a flat everyone turns to me because I am the only one in the group who has a "real" pump

My Zefal HP survived getting run over by a car, when my shoelace got hooked over the lever. The handle was crushed, but I managed to bang it back out when I got it home. There's a tiny dent in the tube, that never seemed to affect pumping. That must have been around 30 years ago.
