BB cable routing help for a Schwinn Tempo!
Hi all. Quick question with is not such a simple solution. The early 80's schwinn tempo use a shimano 600 setup. Under the BB, is not quite a braze on, but more like a retaining clip that retains the cables for the front and rear dérailleurs. Schwinn also used a plastic shield and stuck to the bottom of the BB via adhesive to shield the movement of the cables from the steel of the BB. After a trip to the LBS, I discovered that they have no clue as to a replacement for this part that has lost its integrity after the years. Is it as simple as removing the impaired plastic and grease the cables or is there some other solution I'm missing ? I'm worried that the dirt and gunk accumulating on the BB and the cable movement will compromise the BB steel and rust will ensue. Ideas anyone???

If you don't care about originality, the quickest option may be to buy a modern plastic BB cable guide like this https://www.universalcycles.com/shop...&category=1613 and drill and tap your BB shell for necessary mounting screw.
Alternatively you could find a replacement piece of plastic or use a cut up piece of stick-on chain stay protector.

Or use a short section of about 3 in. of cable housing to protect the bottom bracket steel. The tension of the cable will keep it in place.

Thanks for all the bril ideas! I found a small patch type chain stay protector on nashbar. Looks like it could do the job. If not, a bit of cable housing should work. And yes, I have to clean her, but needed to know I could fix this item before I started the process. Thank you all so much for your most intelligent replies!
