I see that many companies today still sell bikes using threaded stems. Mostly on commuters or throwback styled bikes.

Do they make a simple straight quill without the 'reach' part that can accept threadless stems? Threadless stems just seem to me to be much more flexible and easier to change the angle and reach than do quill stems.

Sure. Google "threadless quill stem adapter" and you should find plenty of options.

Yep: Origin8 MTB Quill Stem Adapter - 22.2/28.6mm, Black

I even managed to find one in the oddball 13/16" diameter to fit my old Schwinn. One of these days I'll get back to that project.

Yep, that's what I was looking for. Thanks.

Do they all have a fixed/machined top cap? I just watched a youtube video and was surprised to see that since the top is machined as part of the adapter, it would still require removal of the quill to change the threadless stem.

I suspect the cheaper items have a separate top cap. (It is on mine.) I see your point about it being easier to swap stems.

Making stems easy to change has never been a priority. Most people might change stems once or maybe twice at the most in the life of a bike, if thy changed them at all.

BITD serious shops kept a few "Major Taylor" stems, or facsimiles for use in fitting a bike. You'd lend the stem to a client who'd move the bars forward and back and up and down until he dialed in his position, then you'd fit the right stem and be done with it.

If that troubles you, it'd be easy enough to trim the top cap down a bit to run flush with the cylindrical surface.

On the plus side, the current standard design enables the same item to also work as a steerer tube extender in many cases.
