Wheelset from CL: rear dish help
Bought this wheelset for a great price from a guy on Craigslist who said he pulled it off of an old bike. It's matrix titan 2 rims laced to shimano Exage 500ex hubs (5/7 speed cassette) in nearly new condition. The front is perfect, however the back has no dish, or the rim is set evenly in between the two flanges, yielding a very uncentered wheel in the rear triangle.
I don't see how this wheel was ever ridden this way??
The seller was awesome and refunded my money and let me keep the wheels. It looks like I should buy new spokes and rebuild the wheel. I really like the wheelset, and don't want to buy a new rear.
I used a spoke length calculator and found that at any cross pattern, the difference between the left and right spoke lengths is only 1.2mm. This doesn't seem like a significant difference.
Any tips, advice, help with which spokes to purchase, should I keep my old spokes, etc would be much appreciated, I'm fairly new to wheel building. Thank you in advance!

Yeah might as well try to re-dish with the existing spokes if they're OK. If the drive side spokes don't poke out the inside of the rim too far and the left side spokes don' unthread too far then you're fine... which you probably are.
Just loosen the all the left side spokes by a half turn, re-true, tighten all the right side spokes by a half turn, re-true, repeat until dished.

You need to check spoke tension to see where you are.
IF the DS spokes seem to be up to tension, you would simply loosen NDS spokes.
That will reduce DS tension "some", but not very much. Maybe something like 2 turns looser on the NDS & 1/4 turn tighter on the DS. (or so...)
Are you sure all the correct NDS spacers are in place?
WHAT is the actual spacing of the hub?
IF 126ish, possibly a 7 speed was added and some spacing had to be added to the DS for the smallest cog to clear?
Is there an actual Shimano FH-xxxxx number on the hub?
I've never seen a 5 speed cassette.
BTW, depending on the number of cogs, NDS tension will typically range from 60-70% of DS tension for your use.
