Seat Post Diameter Options?

How much leeway can you take on the diameter of a seatpost? For example, I have one bike that takes a 26mm post (QR mount,) which I need to replace with one with a clamp that doesn't chew up saddles. Would a 25mm post work? It seems like such a piddling difference, but I don't want to buy something I can't use.

1mm is a big difference in seatposts .Seatpost are sold in size increments of .2mm for good reason.Buy the right size or get an undersize and use the correct shim to make it right. You could use a 25.8 and a beer can shim.

If you use an under-size post you will deform the seat tube when you tighten the bolt.
A post should slide in and out of the tube like a well-fitting piston.

So, rather than start a new thread I figured I would just tack on here.

I built up an old Fuji as a singlespeed. However the seatpost that came with it was too short, only 7.5" including the clamp section. I measured the old one at 26.2 mm, which seems to be a hard diameter to find (at least on eBay/performance/nashbar). Am I better off trying to use a 26 mm w/shim, or will a 26.6 mm post fit? I am afraid that if it did fit, it would never come out.

Any decent bike shop should be able to get you a 26.2mm seatpost. It is not worth getting the wrong size; it will be a waste of time and money.

Kalloy makes cheap aluminum alloy posts available in this size.
Pyramid also does.

Problem Solvers brand makes a seatpost shim that converts a 25.4mm (1" and very common) seatpost to 26.2mm. A good bike shop should be able to get you both of those, as well.

Why would he want a 26.2 post when he needs a 26.0. The 26.2 shim will do him no good either.
