Parts for a 90s era Campy 8 speed shifter

So I have a friend who I am trying to help out who has a lower end campy shifter that is not working properly and I unfortunately am not very familiar with Campy but know they are rebuildable.

Basically what I need is the indexing springs and return springs for the shift levers. Since the bike has been cobbled together and things are so worn that nobody is quite sure exactly what it all is. I am unsure of year and level but my guess is they are Veloce or maybe Mirage. I can buy modern stuff from QBP but am unsure if that will work?

This is probably what I might need but again am unsure if it will work:
Campagnolo Ergopower Right Shift Lever Return Spring: EC-RE137
Campagnolo Ergopower Right Index Spring: 50-EC-RE209
Campagnolo Ergopower Right Coil Spring: EC-RE055
Campagnolo Ergopower Right Hand Index Spring Carrier and Coiling Bushing: 5-EC-RE111

Thanks in advance for any help. I can try and get him to send me some pictures of his shifters but I do know he forged some new brake levers so it may not quite help.

People sell a lot of parts on eBay. If they shift As bad as the set I had, he'd be better off replacing them with DT shifters.

Too bad all these seldom broken parts need replacing. It might be easier to find a donor shifter pair. Andy.

I would gladly suggest that but I know he wouldn't go for DT shifters, no matter what. I actually had found him a 9 speed Shimano Tiagra shifter which would work for him (since it is a shimano 9 speed drive train) I could look on eBay for parts but shifters are way too expensive for my budget and even more expensive for his.

I wish I could find a donor but unfortunately our shop doesn't really ever have much Campy and when we do it is usually more modern high end stuff or really vintage stuff. I think our last campy bikes were a Nuevo Record (a real 10 speed, I forgot the frame maker though but probably 70s era) and Super Record EPS (on a frame given to the customer by Greg Lemond himself) I will ask some other mechanic friends of mine to see if they have anything laying about.

A few years ago I ordered some Ergopwer parts from Andrew Muzi at Yellow Jersey, Yellow Jersey, Ltd., Arlington WI USA Everything Cycling Since 1 April, 1971!
He knows a lot about Campagnolo, send him an email.

Have you checked your local Craigslist?

In the past week, I've found several sets of Shimano 9-speed STI shifters for between $50-$75. I haven't bought any yet as I have several bikes with 7 and 8 speeds, and find them perfectly functional for you purposes.

There is a Seller down towards San Diego with Shimano 105 front and rear derailleurs and 105 brifters he is willing to let got for $60. Something like that might be just what your friend needs.

Let me know by PM, if this is something he's interested in. I can send you the Seller's information.

I wll do that. I was actually on their site a few days ago just poking around and then saw this post and I guess it was meant to be.

I am trying to help him repair his shifters on the cheap. I would love to get him new mechs but I think he is happy with what he has I just want to improve it a bit. He uses the bike more for transportation than just a pure love of cycling and gear, like many of us.

This is probably what I might need but again am unsure if it will work:
Campagnolo Ergopower Right Shift Lever Return Spring: EC-RE137
That's different, and the original is discontinued. I bought the last one from Loose Screws. No clue if the new one swaps.

Those take a long time to fatigue so it's probably OK.

Campagnolo Ergopower Right Index Spring: 50-EC-RE209
Those interchange.

Campagnolo Ergopower Right Coil Spring: EC-RE055
8 speed shifters don't have clock springs.

Campagnolo Ergopower Right Hand Index Spring Carrier and Coiling Bushing: 5-EC-RE111
You'll need to cut the post off.

Of course, if you actually have 9 speed shifters being used in a shimergo 9 speed setup the new parts will be fine.

His shifters are pretty worn out, they see a ton of use daily. Probably at the very least 30+ miles a day almost 365 for many many years. He is running them in some sort of friction mode. He is an interesting character and his bike is an oddity.

I am glad to know at least two of the parts should work ok or with a little modification. Thanks for the suggestions

I'm going to extend this discussion and state that modern/current components are not intended to work well for the rider that you describe. 30+ miles a day for a year is 11K in all kinds of weather. The reality of this level of use is a large lack of keeping up with wear and maintenance. The hours in the day... Sure for a few years some sort of system will work. But in time things will catch up.

The best solutions are from decades ago. friction shifters that auto adjust for some wear aspect. few cog counts allowing wide chains and less trimming. No cable or housing specs needing to be followed. Given today's rate of planned obsolescence no current system is made to give many years of 10+k of use. Andy.
