What is this called?
Hi Everyone. Hope you can help. I am replacing an Edge 1 Spinner shock on a Diamond Back mountain bike with a RockShox recon silver. Can anyone tell me that this centering/seal is on this picture of my Edge 1 shock? The rockshox does not have it (it's just flush) and I'm not sure why not since it seems to center the shock on the bearing on the bike. Any help is appreciated.

Your arrow is pointing directly at the headset bearing race. It sounds like you are replacing the fork, and plan on using the same headset, then you will need to remove that race and install it on the new fork.

Crown race. It comes with the headset. If u r using the same headset then just pop it off your old shock and slide it onto the new one.

As noted above the part is the "crown race" and is pressed onto the fork.
There are 2 general classes.
1- the classic crown race which is the lower cone of a traditional cup/cone headset. This is the actual bearing race, and therefore specific to the headset.
2- a centering cone for a cartridge bearing headset. Though we still call it a crown race out of tradition, the actual race is part of the cartridge bearing, and this only serve as a centering cone, in the same way that the split cone on top does. As such it's generic and pretty much universal. Often these are split and don't need to be pessed on.
