Need new front derailleur for 1998 Rockhopper

I've replaced the shifters on my 1998 Rockhopper. Before doing so the front derailleur rubbed on the chain. After replacing it continues to do the same. The tension appears to be okay.

I've tried to adjust limit screws but the high (large ring) adjuster doesn't appear to do anything. The low adjuster works fine.

Will this derailleur work? The bike is an 8 speed with 22/32/42 front chainring. Bottom pull.

Which shifters? Possibly a road type which is incompatible with a mountain FDER?

The 390 is designed for 9 speed.
A 360 series is for 7/8 speed.

IF the H limit doesn't do "anything", that infers an incorrect cable adjustment or incorrect BB spindle length. Did you change the BB and/or crank?
If anything, you should be able to screw it in far enough to prevent a shift to the largest ring.

Throwing parts at the bike will not fix improper adjustment. Set it up right, from scratch. Follow online instructions. It's not that hard.

I set everything up from scratch as suggested. The rear seems to shift just fine. The front still has numerous issues. I still get chain rub in cross chain situations which I guess I'm just not used to. I don't make a habit of being in gears to cross chain, but my other bike doesn't do it at all. So I can live with that I suppose. It makes me wonder if the kmc chain is wider or if the front derailleur cage is longer and causing the interference.

My other issues are my shift from the smallest front chaining to the middle ring doesn't always work. It just makes a bunch of noise and remains partially on the small ring. Maybe I'm just not pushing the new trigger shifter hard enough.

Last and most annoying is I am getting serious chain suck in the front small ring. It's a new chain on old ring. Could that be related to my shifting issue?

Are you using the original crank, front derailer, and front shifter? If so, everything should be working fine unless something is broken. If you've mixed and matched stuff then it might not be compatible with each other. It sounds like your front shifter could be broken but it's really hard to diagnose online.

Your chain suck could definitely be caused by the worn chainring.

The KMC chain should have nothing to do with your issues.

It's the original crank and front derailleur, but I installed new front trigger shifters. The old shifters were twist microshift. Not sure if that makes a difference.

It STILL sounds like you have the cable too slack.

Agreed, cable sounds too slack (since the shifters are new.) I've seen it a million times, even with people employed a bike shop that simply didn't know how to setup a front derailer...

With no cable attached, the FD should fall to the small ring. When it's there, setup the L limit screw just loose enough so that you don't get rubbing in the small-large combo. Then attach the cable. There should be no slack! If there's slack, adjust it out with the barrel adjuster or try again. You might have to hold the cable tight with pliers as you tighten it down.
