cleaning brake pads

Hey folks, I've read and searched through these forums regarding some brake issues and want to suggest an idea. I recently got a new giant yukon with Hayes MX2's. I know that they are on the low-end for discs but I still expect them to provide plenty of stopping power. At the least, enough to lock up my fronts. No matter how I adjust the cable tension or the pad adjuster, I can't get them to lock up my fronts. Tried cleaning the discs with alcohol, too.

At this point, I think that the pads may be contaminated. Instead of throwing them in the oven or lighting them on fire, has anyone ever tried using a degreaser on them? Something like simple green or dishwashing detergent seems like it'll get the grease off. Has anyone ever tried this? Any obvious reasons why this might be a horrible idea?

TIA,
Jim

DO NOT treat your pads with ANY chemicals.
If they are dirty or glazed you can use a sanding block and light pressure to clean.

Enjoy

I glue a piece of 80 grit sanding paper to some dead flat press board that I can clamp to a work bench. Just rub out the bads on that nice and evenly.

Yes, just scuffing the pads should give them more grip. If ya' don't have any sandpaper handy, a fingernail file will also work in a pinch. Also, don't forget to clean the braking surface where the pad contacts the disc. I usually use a scotchbrite pad with warm water only to take the glaze off my rims (disc in your case).

Thanks for the replies!

I'll try it and see how it works out early next week. I would do it this weekend but I'm going to be at Granogue on Sunday. It's my first race and I have enough to worry about without possibly screwing up my brakes.

Better to live with the soft braking I know than to scrounge for replacement pads Saturday night. Plus, I think the rain will soften up the ground and reduce max available traction.

Anybody else going to Delaware?
