First brake dust, now shifter dust.

My disc brakes have accumulated a fine layer of black brake dust, which is fine. But I noticed yesterday that my ultegra shifters have accumulated a fine layer of shifter dust on it too.
I never shift the front ring so that never sees any use. But the rear shifter, I shift a whole lot to and from work and I noticed there's a lot of dust on it. Am I really wearing out the shifter that quickly?

Pulley dust, maybe? My derailleurs are never clean enough to notice that kind of accumulation--not with trail riding anyway.

They're at the actual shifters, not the derailleur. It's only on the right one, which I shift a lot. I just can't imagine it's grinding away and wearing down THAT much material..

D'oh! Thought that first pic looked like a shifter/brake combo of some sort, but I figured the second was your high-tech commuting derailleur. I still wonder if it might be pulley dust. Maybe you're going so fast and shifting so hard that you're meeting the dust as you fly around the earth and it's sticking to your shifter...or is that Superman that did that? Is your name Clark Kent?
