Of course I'm not suggesting a conspiracy, just something that seems to work for the companies making the gear.

The point is standardization. Not forbidding any innovation, just choosing the best - by independent engineers, not salesmen.
RD cable pull ratio for example - why allow each producer to have their own pull ratio?
That's the way I see it, but no need to worry, since it's not my call anyway.
