New Cup Style Bottom Bracket Fix Chainring rub?

On a frame I recently bought, I have run into a problem where any old square taper crankset that I put on it heavily grinds the frame.. I was thinking, since I will be putting a new group on it anyways, will the new cup style bottom brackets provide the extra space that I need? They do appear to come out pretty far from the bike frame..

Spindle length determines where the crank sits, not the cups. If by "new group" do you mean "new" group or "different" group. The crankset chosen determines the BB needed. Many "new" groups use external BB styles and the spindle is part of the crank not the bottom bracket unlike a square taper crank

Some cranks require a longer spindle on the right side. Also, if you bought a frame designed as an MTB then it may not accommodate a large (ex. 52t) chainwheel without rubbing the chainstay. You need to give more info, as you've given us none at all on the parts involved. What spindle and crankset have you tried with each other, and on what frame?

"Old, square taper crankset".

How old? The design of the crankset is the single most significant factor in determining what bottom bracket spindle length that you need. Newer square taper cranksets require a much shorter BB spindle length than many of the older ones.

It has a Campagnolo Veloce bb from 1998. I have mainly been trying older cranksets so maybe that is the culprit lol. Can't use my 70s nuovo record crankset oh well. It looked damn good too lol.

your 70's Nuovo record wants an asymmetrical spindle. my personal experience with an ofmega crankset (pretty much a campy clone) was it was extremely difficult to impossible to make it work with anything but the BB it was designed to work with. YMMV.

Phil Wood has the option of Period Correct and new ISO taper spindles and JIS .. in various lengths .

Plus since the assembly is a tight press fit of a smooth spindle shaft they can be pulled thru the bearings to further adjust the offset.
