Caveat - The following advise was recommended to me for my plain aluminum road bike wheels. I assume they would work fine for plain aluminum mtb wheels.
Several posters here recommended scrubbing with hairspray to deglaze and stop brake squealing. One of the wrenches at my LBS recommended deglazing with Scotchbrite. I tried both. They cleaned the rims reallywell but did not stop the squealing which I have since decided is being caused by uneven pressure.
If it ain't broke, mess with it anyway!
