Air sprung/coil with preload adjuster fork ....wha????
There is some discussion over the hybrid forum in the specialized crosstrail owners thread regarding the functionality of the suspension fork.
It is a 700c NCX model on the comp model.
The discussion centers around whether the fork is air compression or coil compression.
The specs at the suntour website say "left side, air sprung/coil with preload adjuster"
So you can see our confusion.
Here is the link to their specs.
Appreciate your expert input.

Suspension shocks have two components: a coil spring that cushions road bumps, and a damper that prevents up-and-down oscillation of the vehicle that would drive us crazy. The damper pushes and pulls fluid back and forth through small holes. The fluid can be air or oil. The resistance caused by the small holes is what dampens the oscillations.

The fork is available from Suntour as an air *or* coil sprung fork. I highly doubt a manufacturer specified the air sprung fork, but it's easy enough to tell--is there a schrader valve cap on the top of one of the sliders?

From the Specialized Crosstrail Comp page:
"Custom SR Suntour NCX, custom Multi-Circuit Damping, custom coil/MCU spring weights, 50mm travel, integrated remote hydraulic lockout lever, mag lowers, Cr-Mo stanchions, post disc mount"

"Custom air sprung fork features our Multi-Circuit Damping technology to eliminate any "pogo" effect over its 50mm of travel. This means that its hydraulic damped suspension and rebound will effectively smooth out bumpy or rough terrain."
Hence the discussion.

Left side of top crown, the black cap should come off, and there should be shrader valve under if it's air.
Edit: Just read Specialized spec page for that bike and looks like its coil version; either way, check your fork.
If it's not air sprung maybe you guys should all file complaints and go after Sinyard like be does everyone else. Joking aside, most manufacturers say specs subject to change.

You are correct. This is what it says on the spec page, but if you click back to the 'features' page for the comp it says;
"Custom air sprung fork features our Multi-Circuit Damping technology to eliminate any "pogo" effect over its 50mm of travel. This means that its hydraulic damped suspension and rebound will effectively smooth out bumpy or rough terrain."

In effect, ALL forks have an air-spring component. As it compressed, the air-volume T the top is squeezed and its pressure increases and resists further compression.

there is no valve for air input. It's not a pricey fork, so I'm sure it's not a pneumatically damped fork. That mention of air in both the features section for the comp on the specialized website, and the suntour description on their website got some folks a little excited.
Personally I didn't know there were such things as air forks untill I saw it mentioned. I don't take my bike on rough trails, so they do all I need them to do.
