10 speed crankset on 8 speed drivetrain.

I am looking to upgrade my crankset on my old Sora 8 speed road bike. I have read in several places that it is OK to use a 9-10 or 11 speed crankset with 8 speed cassette and shifters.

Anyone have experience doing this and can confirm it will work OK?

Yes, I have done this several times and it works fine. Worst case you will get some rubbing of the chain on the big ring when using the small-small combinations. The solution for this is some very thin chainring-bolt washers to space the rings a bit further apart.

I mix and match components all the time. For example, I use old Campy Record doubles and Specialites TA triples (from the 70s!) with modern Campy ten speed rear ends. Going the other way should work even more smoothly.

I currently have an 8-speed cassette and rear derailleur with a Tiagra 10-speed (FC-4603) triple crank on one bike. I am using a 10-speed chain because that's what i had in inventory and it shifts fine with the 8-speed cassette and derailleur.
