Let me read your MIND!

Ok well not really, I have this late 80's Nishiki Prestige, friction shifting all that good stuff, and were in love. I know were not supposed to change the ones we truly love, but im still curious whether its possible to swap its freewheel for a freehub. ??? if possible, would this even be a good idea?

What do you hope to gain by this change?

Easy; just lace a freehub into your wheel and re-space the dropouts as needed.

Assuming that you don't have index shifting you can use any multi gear system that you want. But the earlier question still holds. Why?

Of course, if you need a new wheel anyway, it might make sense, so as long as you have a reason, or not, feel free to go ahead.

If it's 5 speed now the dropouts will be 120 mm wide. If it's 6 speed it may be 126 mm. 7 speed uses 126 mm so you may have to spread the dropouts.
I've got a couple friction setups using a 7 speed freehub and with a modern cassette and chain, the shifting is amazing, almost index like.

I could tell you exactly how I changed a 2X5 into a 3X9.
All you have to do is follow the title of your topic.

I'm surprised nobody told you yet (although maybe you already know), you can't just take the freewheel off your wheel and put a freehub instead, you'd have to remove the entire hub from your wheel (which means removing all the spokes) and rebuild the wheel with a freehub and add a cassette. If you're not up for that, then you buy a prebuilt wheel with a freehub.

And yes, as others mentioned, you have to think about hub width and dropout spacing.

in the 80's I Spent my Money on a Phil Wood Freewheel hub and built a wheel around it..

the shortcoming of Freewheel hubs is the axles Bend , Phil's Wont.

Back then the "speeds" were 6.. the over locknut width has since expanded from 126 to 130 & 135 to fit in 8 or more "speeds"

Not sure what id be gaining or losing. Really im kind of cheapo, so if I happen to be looking for freewheels they are going to be previously owned. Where I look im just coming across splined cassette getups way more often. Are there any considerations you could share?
