idiot question
my bike build is almost complete. i asked my local dealer if he would order me a 28.6mm front derailleur from campanoglo for me because the cut rate internet stores don't have that size. he needed to know if it was a top or a bottom. i didn't know what he was talking about. does the cable route along the top tube or come around underneath the bb? i had totally forgot about that part. my frame is a 97 cromo with downtube shifter braze ons. the only shifters i have installed have been downtube shifters. i am putting ergo shifters on this bike. naturally, the cables go down underneath the bb. i've done that before. you screw in that plastic dohingy. this is the part that i don't get, and please excuse the long wind. i can't imagine, looking at my frame, where the cable is going to go from the ergo shifters to the bb. do you install something onto the downtube? where do you cut off the cable housing etc.? your input is appreciated, as they are getting tired of me at the bike store. i almost got bounced.

A frame with downtube shifters will most likely have a bottom pull der. but you probably figured that out already.
These should solve your problem - downtube to sti/ergo adapters

First of all, if they get tired of you at the bike store for asking questions in order to have them order the correct component for you, you need to look for a new bike store.
And yes, you are correct in your assumption about the cable stops which screw onto the downtube shifter mounts so that you can run cables on up to ergo shifters. Your LBS should have those, or be able to order them.

ah excellent. they screw into the mounts where the old school shifters would have begun. i envisioned a ring to tighten around the downtube. ya, i'm more defending my ego and self conscious than getting a hard time. this town is bully about supporting the local economy. they ARE building me wheels, but losing the rest of the build to the internet. the vibe today was totally weird though and i might go somewhere else. thanks.
