Sun tour GPX shifter ?

I have a late 80's Dave Scott Centurion with 7sp Suntour GPX shifters. My question is can a Shimano STX 8spd. long cage rear der. work with the GPX shifter in the non friction mode. A friend gave me the bike it was left out in the rain, so I'm building it up as a beater commuter bike

Thanks

Not likely due to difference in RD throw ratios. If you got it it cost nothing to try tho.Nothing wrong with friction on a beater either.

Thanks I couldn't adjust out a double shift towards the bigger gears. I thought the shifting ratios might be different. I'll put it back in friction mode. Its a really a nice ride for free. I put new tires, tubes, cables, and bartape on, plus all the near new parts I had lying around. And to think I almost bought new.
