if it doesn't make the feel when coasting, I'd say you should look into the bottom bracket where the crank goes through at the bottom of the frame. I guess you could slip your chain off or something and just hold yourself up and pedal the bicycle in place. If it still makes the grinding, then I'd guess its in your pedal bearings or the bottom bracket bearing.
If the bike was really old like the 1978 Raleigh I worked on tonight (greasing the bottom bracket
), then I'd say you should do the same, but more than likely it is a cartrige type bearing, which can't be greased/maintained.
