Need help adjusting a D-clamp on a Dahon
Hi,
I posted the question at the "folding" sub-forum with no luck, so I repost it here...
I recently bought a used Dahon Eco C6 and, though I have searched, I can't find instructions for the adjustment of the specific frame hinge (I think it is called a D-clamp), which you can see in the photos I have attached. (In the first photo the hinge is closed, in the rest it is opened, so it can be adjusted...)
Obviously the two long hinge latch bolts have to be turned downwards or upwards for the adjustment (I think downwards tightens the hinge), but I don't know the use of the little screws at the end of each bolt (better seen at the third photo)…. At the beginning i thought they were "lock screws" (not sure if it is the correct term), that need to be unscrewed in order to turn the latch bolts, and then screwed again in order to prevent accidental turning of the bolts. But after "playing" with them a little, they do not seem to serve this purpose. Any ideas?
And another question: Can you describe how hard the latch must feel when I close it, if it is correctly adjusted?

Hello
I would suggest that you contact Thorusa.com. Thor is usally active on the folding bike subforum and responds to many Dahon questions. I have owned probably 10 Dahons, all used, and have rebuilt a few from the 80s. I never seen that particular hinge. Though the cam tensioning is is similar to both old answer designs. I would agree with you that the phillips screws appear to be a tension adjustment locking screw and perhaps a hinge pin retention method. But it's only a guess from the pictures.
EDIT:
Refer to the linked document : https://site.nycewheels.com/Documents...structions.pdf
It has some good basic information on hinge adjustment and closing force, though your hinge is not specifically illustrated, it is much the same. Obviously since your type had two "vice grip locks" (cam tensioning). they should be balanced (adjusted the same).
Further in regards to the screw, I double checked my Speed TR and Helos before leaving for work, They both had the phillips screw at the end of the tension adjustment coupler!
I had never touched this screw even though I had occasional tweaked the tension coupler. I need to check if it is indeed a lock or just a method for retaing the coupler at one end.
In the closed position of course tension would keep the coupler from turning.
