Accushift with a VGT?
Hi, Before I take time with trial and error, can anybody tell me what I can expect using an accushift thumb shifter and a VGT rear derailler?

VGT is a very old rear derailleur. I doubt it will index with any kind of shifter. If you've got a friction shifter, however, you're good.
Back in the day, VGT's were the bomb! They'd shift a 12 to 34 five speed freewheel (all big jumps between gears) without a hiccup. The slant parallellogram was a major improvement over the previous designs. Course, I think they weighed about 3 times what a modern derailleur weighs.

A VGT is a very old derailleur design. It far pre dates any indexing shifting system. I doubt it will index satisfactorily with any shifter.
As long as you had a friction shifter, they were the bomb! I think that they work best with super wide ratio freewheels like 14/34 because that's the angle the parallellogram was designed to mimic.
Campers liked them because you didn't have to bring along a mallet to pound in your tent stakes. A VGT derailleur is plenty big and stout enough to do the job. You don't even have to break your chain to remove a VGT derailleur from your bike due to the unique cage design.

When my friend's daughter broke her Shimano rear derailleur, I gave him my 1971 first-generation SunTour VGT, which worked well with the Shimano freewheel and 7-speed indexed shifter. Give it a try; you may be pleasantly surprised.
Otherwise, why not simply put that Accushift thumb lever in friction mode, which is where I always keep mine?

I used a very old suntour honor 5-speed derailleur with a 7 speed freewheel and crappy walmart shifters on my old huffy. It indexed as well as it did when it was new...
