new Frankin Bike CAAD3 Shimano/ campy build... can this be done?

ok bike mechanics,

here is the goal, a flat bar 18sp, with friction shifting..

the things i have ..

Cannondale CAAD3 frame with braze ons for DT Shifers..
build with record and chours 8sp..
Record crankset and rings.. sp 53/39
wheel set i want to use is a old set of velocity circuit Shimano 9sp..
will be going with t flat bar of bull horns.. with brake levers..

now, can i use a shimano 9sp chain on a campy 8sp chainset (cranks and rings)
i think i have the shifting satisfied with going pure friction..

if needed i can use a 9sp shim ultegra rear mech, but i kind want to use the chorus.

the sticking point i see is will a 9speed shram or shimanio chain mate with a 8sp campy record chain rings.. or is its profile just too narrow?

help?

A Shimano (or KMC or Wipperman or SRAM) 9-speed chain will work fine with the Campy 8-speed cassette and chainrings. Front shifting will be ok but don't shift under load as the thinner chain may "skate" between the wider spaced chainrings. Shift under modest tension and all will be well. Friction shifters are agnostic as to what derailleurs and cassette you use.
