Fix for broken/missing nylon set screw insert in RD
One of the things companies have been doing lately to save money is using nylon inserts for the Hi Lo set screws instead of threading the aluminum itself. It's probably the weakest link in the RD. I've been working on my son's bike, and purchased from craigs a 9 speed Sram X9 RD. Didn't realize until I tried to set it up that one of the set screw nylon inserts was in two pieces and wouldn't hold the screw. Apart from that the RD is in great shape, so I set to figuring out a fix. I'm probably not the first one to work this fix, but I haven't seen it posted with pics.
First, buy 3/16" OD, 3/32" ID Microfuel tubing (tygon tubing, essentially
Cut a piece of it and push it onto a 2.5mm hex wrench
Clean the tube and swab out the hole in the RD with denatured or rubbing alcohol
Dab a bit of super glue on the tubing and use the 2.5mm hex to push it into the hole. Let dry and then extract the hex wrench.
Trim top and bottom of the tube with a razor. Insert set screw. Voila.

Most "Good" hardware stores, especially if they sell and service yard equipment, as well as power equipment dealers stock and sell most sizes of tygon fuel line in short lengths off a bulk roll for $2-3 a foot. Commonly used on small 2 strokes like chain saws, blowers, and trimmers. No need to buy a full roll.
