New Bike Wheels, where do I start

So this is a new item for me. I've got a Specialized Crosstrail w/manual discs, my riding is primarily on paved and unpaved (gravel) trails, no mountain biking.

I would like to investigate some new wheels as an upgrade but where?

Current wheel is a SDX-200, 622x18C, 32 spoke, with disc brakes.

Some help in sorting out approperate wheels to get me started, also brands, the good and the bad!

What do you hope to accomplish with this upgrade?

If your wheels are round and true and the bearings are greased up and set properly I would just leave them and ugrade the tires if they are low quality. I think tires change the ride more then new wheels would for the type of riding your doing.

You need some tubular rims and silk sew-ups!

You can go online or your favorite bike shop and get wheels from a catalog or you can go to www.PSIMet.com (a Bike Forums member) or other online custom wheel builder and order custom wheels.

As dsbrantjr said, the starting point is: "What do you hope to accomplish with this upgrade?"

Next as
SquidPuppet said: "What are you dissatisfied by on your current wheels? What do you want to improve?"

And finally, as
Bill Kapaun said: "Your budget is how much?"

After you have answered the above, someone here MIGHT be able to help you.

As nfmisso said, "AFTER you have answered the above, someone here MIGHT be able to help you."

Your question "what are good wheels" is so vague, we can't even begin to answer it (except for DiabloScott who jokes about a very expensive/finicky/high-end solution)

It's like just dropping in and asking "I have a Honda civic, I think I'd like to get a better car, what's good?"
Well, Ferarris are good. Hondas are also good.

You gotta give some criteria to work with, what is bad about what you have, and what good are you looking for in other wheels?
