Replacing a Stem without having to Recut Tube
Hi,
I'm experimenting with different length stems for long distance riding and don't want to cut my tube in case the new stem length doesn't work.
My current stem height (i.e. the displacement it takes up on the steering tube) is about 42mm.
Is that the standard stem height?
Is there a standard?
What are the acceptable tolerances for the stem height that would work so I wouldn't need to recut the tube: 42+-5mm?
Thanks.

Spacers come as thin as 2.5mm. I'm certain you can manage variations in stem height without cutting steerers.

There is no standard for the stem height along the steerer. However since spacers are normally used anyway, and there's plenty of margin in the stack overrun beyond the top of the fork, it doesn't matter. Fit your new stem, use spacers above and below to get the top of the stack beyond the steerer by at least 1/16" and you'll be fine.
