Swap the RD too?
That thread about the SRAM der got me thinking; I've been considering going to trekking bars on the 7100, and my grip shifters are starting to wear, so maybe I should change out the whole mess to give myself more options as far as shifters. Not overly fond of the 3.0's riveted in pulleys anyway.
It's a 2010 Trek 7100, and I've already swapped the 14-34t freewheel for a 13-28t, shortening the chain by a few links in the process. I've never used trekking bars before, so I'm not sure what the best options are for brakes and shifters. (V-brakes at the moment, though I'll have to replace the cables and housings soon anyway, so that might be up for a change too.) Any thoughts? Would like to stay reasonably economical, but I can spread it across a few orders to keep my sticker shock down too.

On my trekking bar equipped Trek 720, I put cross levers and reverse aero levers on each side, so that I could grab the brakes from more locations. Doing it over again, I'd go with two sets of cross levers. Keep the V-brakes and purchase two sets of Tektro RL740 - SJS Cycles or eBay.
I went with Sunrace friction levers on the inside front bend, which I can reach from many positions.
