how bad did i just f my LHT frame?

I was installing fenders and I accidentally gouged a bit of metal from the backside of my chainstay bridge. I sprayed rust preventer on the area. Did I just ruin my brand new bike?

all I see is a chip in the paint . if that all it is yes you are fine . go to a drugstore and pick up some nail polish or a hobby store for some model paint to match the color . as far as the bike go it fine get out there and enjoy it .

That's absolutely nothing. It isn't even a necessary structural part and you didn't do any damage anyway.

first of many dings and scratches wear it as a badge of honor. No big deal, get some nail polish, cover it and ride on!!

Nothing to worry about. Bikes get used and they get chips, scratches and dings. Clean the area with mineral spirits and put a small dab of touch-up paint over the scratch if you are worried about corrosion. The LHT is a chromemoly frame and will withstand some pretty significant injury before becoming structurally compromised. My gravel bike is an old chromemoly MTB and it has lots of battle scars. Looks like hell, works like new. Everybody likes a nice looking bike and the first scratch is always the worst. Don't get OCD about it or you'll drive yourself nuts and never want to take the bike out.

The bike is fine, but you have to make a critical decision.

Either get less clumsy or less OCD, because if neither changes you'll be in the nuthouse before your next birthday.

I would have said is a Surly, for goodness sake. The whole concept is to sell an overpriced boat anchor steel bike that isn't even a better frame (lighter, faster, stronger) than Japanese steel touring bikes from the low yen golden age. You can find a better steel bike on any Craigslist, and ANY vintage Cannondale ST will embarrass a LHT in terms of loaded touring carrying capacity (the LHT will fail first, and handling will just get downright spooky at overloaded weights), in terms of how the bike rides in a sport capacity (unloaded in terms of acceleration, climbing, handling, cornering, etc.).

I always thought of Surly LHT bikes as a sport touring bike for people that don't know anything that want to build a ubiquitous build in the age of social media. Overpriced boat anchors. Other than that, I have no opinion on them.

The great number of touring riders who have made huge numbers of successful cross country and around-the-world tours on heavily loaded LHT's will be happy to know what a great mistake they have made in their choice of bikes. Thank you for enlightening them.

I agree Surly LHT has a great following. I also was shocked by its weight.

My question is, is all that weight really necessary for touring? Or is it just at the Surly price point (<$500) thats what they could build?

Don't let the haters get you down.

And to avoid any further paint chips, you can take one expedient step: Never ride the thing. Get a big moving box, wrap the thing in moving blankets, stuff the whole thing in the box, add peanut packing, tape the box shut, rent a storage unit and put the box into it. You'll not have to worry about these issues anymore. Of course, you won't be able to ride the thing either.

Seriously, there will be little dings, scratches and paint chips that your bike will accrue from riding. It's the price of using the thing in the real world. Ride the thing, enjoy it, and don't sweat the dings.

Yes, Surly has a great following because they work for their intended purpose.

But wait a minute, in your posting above you called them; " Overpriced boat anchors.". Now you say they are built to a low price point. Which is it?

How much does a LHT weigh? They look like nice bikes and the geometry looks like it would handle just fine.

When I read the title I assumed someone had done something reasonable like tried to put a kickstand on a LHT
