8 speed hub has drag/noise in the lower 3 gears
Hi All,
I have an 8 speed shimano internal gear hub. It's about 3 years old. I replaced a flat recently on my rear tire and now there is more drag and some sort of scraping noise in the lower 3 gears. Once I get up to the 4,5,6,7,8 gears it doesn't seem to be a problem and there isn't any dragging and there isn't any noise.
I'm also seeing that the gears are getting stuck more often when I shift.
Is this a case where I need to add more oil to the hub? I've never done that -- in fact I've never done any maintenance to this hub. So -- any advice or help on this?

I suspect when you removed the axle nuts the non-driveside lock nut/cone came loose. Then when you tighten the axle nuts the hub bearings got mal-adjusted too tight.

Or your cable tension needs adjusted.
You should have done maintence on that hub after 1000 miles or probably a year. Shimano are often... skimpy with their lubrication.
Relubing the hub is pretty easy and only requires you to remove a few things from the outside of the hub. Barely harder than repacking wheel hubs or fixing an axle.

The IGH needs two different types of lube. First, it needs some sort of gear lube for the whole assembly. Many people have had good luck with ATF (automatic transmission fluid), including me. You can buy the expensive shimano stuff if you'd like. I don't think it's necessary.
Then you need to grease the bearings, and that's just whatever grease you usually use for bearings. I bought the park stuff (green) a while ago and just use that for most stuff, however I think I got the shimano grease when I bought the hub, so I just used that for the hub bearings.
