OK, problem solved. It's wasn't as badly damaged as I first thought. The shop retapped the threads and got the pedal on.
The mechanic also made something of a "custom spacer" for the hub to hold the rear cog in place. It's a thick wirelike coil that he wrapped around the hub. He says he's done it numerous times with good success. It's metal and looks pretty cool actually. I'll take some pics of it later and post. Oh and it was cheap too... he only charged me $5 for it... less expensive than a ton of spacers.

Next time you cannot screw what ever between 2 bicycle components, stop and inspect thoroughly the threads. In the crank, as an example, If I am not able to screw the pedal from the outside (ordinary position) I try to do it from the inside, by hand, no wrench. In this case the thread in the outside part for the pedal may be damage by mismatching pedal threads.

Hey man, its good to see another newbie is running into the same issues I've been. I recently acquired an old bridgestone rb3 that I felt deserved to be revived. It was actually in good working order but I wanted to repaint it. stripping all of the parts was a total chore. I started stripping the paint tonight and its going pretty well. I also ran into the whole getting the crankset off problem but that issue was of course solved with a little help from a crank puller. I'm going to watch your progress with enthusiasm, and hopefully will post some pics of my bike when I get it all fixed up.

oh, btw, if you want custom decals cut you can go to any sign shop and get them to cut you some vinyl, just provide them with vector art. I'm doing skull and crossbones or hawian flowers or something. Just apply them before you do the clearcoats

SMAUG- I am doing pretty much the same thing as you are, but with a Schwinn Sprint bike, all i really have to do is get new cables, reinstall my derailers, brake handles, and cranks. when i took it apart all the bearings and all were rusted or incredibly dirty i replaced the ones around the cranks and cleaned the ones on the forks. My bike used to be a metallic brown, with gold "Sprint" decals i guess is the best way to describe them. Now it does a color fade from a metallic blue to a darker metallic blue and then into a black, I think it looks slick... before i do my clear coat i'm gonna have to take everything off again which is why i'm not putting all the hard stuff on yet. I plan on painting a little picture on it that says "Powered by GIJOE" and then get the clear coat. I took my bike to a cycle shop to get the cranks, and bearing cups taken off. I will post the whole work once i get home and have all the pictures on a CD.

OK everyone, here's a bit of an update...
Unfortunately, the project has been but on hold indefinitely. In the middle of June, a somewhat last minute opportunity to study abroad (I'm a medical student) came up and I've somehow managed to land myself in Norwich, UK.
The Peugeot is completed, except for the final paint job. I did have time to apply several coats of primer before I left, but no paint. The remainder of the bike is complete and it rides like a dream.
I didn't have time to arrange to have it brought to the UK with me, although I'm REALLY REALLY kicking myself for not trying to do that. The area around here is COMPLETELY flat and somewhat bike friendly. I could easily commute to my hospital from my flat. Perfect for a single speed.
But for the time being, the formerly Orange Peugeot is in my cousins garage in San Francisco.
Thanks to everyone for their input when I was putting it together. It will be ridden someday... rest assured.
