BB cups - grease or loctite? Grease crank spindle?

I just installed a UN72 Shimano BB with aluminum cups in a steel frame. The cups had some grey stuff on the threads from the factory, don't know if it is adhesive or lubricant. I installed the cups with nickel anti seize, installed the crank arms dry on the square taper spindle.

Seems Italian and French would more likely need Loctite on the fixed cup than English, or just use anti seize and tighten firmly? I don't like to grease square taper spindles since I don't want to risk bottoming out or spreading the socket.

You'd rather ask strangers on the Internet for opinions than read the instructions that came with the BB?

No instructions with the bottom bracket. They were last made likely in the 1990s

Your anti seize is excellent. Grease your spindle, or not, whatever floats your boat.

I use Tef-Gel TEF-GEL - Ultra safety systems - Home page on all my dissimilar metal joints, like BBs and pedal threads.

Not greasing seems to floating my boat since I've been riding the same Suntour Superbe crankset for the last 30 years on 3 bottom brackets. Replaced the original with a cartridge due to corrosion, replaced the Shimano UN55 with a UN72 for fun.

Because UN72 Shimano BB is a cartridge , 1, is a single piece, separate rings, just hold it in place
They're not"cups".
the torque, adequate, keeps it fixed , so a little grease will smooth the torque.

Its the shear force in the thread interaction with the right mounting ring shoulder, that holds it solid..

on the left side the aluminum mounting ring adds stability, and seats on the edge of the cartridge

because of the possibility of the rust & corrosion,... same things that create stuck stems and seatposts
a layer of grease is advised.

I'm a fan of the anti seize paste on the cups.

Anti-seize or grease is good. Don't use loctite.

Ah. I suppose I was picturing one that was NOS in box with everything included. Shimano is really good at specifying what to use on the cup threads, how much torque to use, and all that.

I bought a KHS Tange #2 frameset from a guy and though he wouldn't budge on the price, he sweetened the deal with a seat post and the UN72 BB, which is in near new appearing condition. I installed the UN72 BB in my 1984 Performance Superbe bike I've been riding since new. The KHS frame gets the hand me down BB and becomes a flip flop with Origin 8 wheels.

Nice. Sorry about my snark at the outset -- it sounds like you did things right when installing yours. Since the bearings are in cartridges rather than rolling directly on the cups, I'm not sure if Italian ones still like to loosen themselves or not.

This Shimano manual covers installation of a square taper cartridge type bottom bracket:

https://si.shimano.com/php/download.p...002-11-ENG.pdf

It names BB-UN100 on the title page, but I would assume the instructions apply equally to a UN72. It says "If the main body [of the bottom bracket] and adapter are made of aluminum or steel apply grease to the main body and adapter. If the main body and adapter are made of plastic do not apply grease to the main body or adapter."

Personally, I've always put grease on both the threads in the frame and on the bottom bracket pieces.

After having two BBs freeze (on two different bikes) in one spring, I like using Teflon tape. It won't wash out over time, so it should prevent the corrosion that freezes BBs in the shell.

No worries. This cartridge is English threaded, I was asking about French and Italian conventional BB cups since I have bikes with these.
