Steerer tube extension

Is anyone aware of a "kit" that makes it possible to extend the length of an aluminium steerer? I am thinking of a tube with outside diameter same as the steerer (1 1/8). It would be stepped down at one end to slide into the steerer. It could be bonded and perhaps secured additionally with some sort of mechanical fastener. I am not fond of the bolt on extenders because they provide more extension than I need and they are ugly. I prefer not buying a new fork. Thanks

Something like this:
BBB BIKE BICYCLE FORK EXTENDER BHP-21
It has a number of various sized spacers so you can custom fit as needed.

I just bought something like this. Mine looked well made. $13 on amazon, and they delivered it today (on a Sunday). I believe it's machined out of one piece of aluminum. The interior 1 1/8" ID extends to about a 1/4" below the steerer extension.

I have two choices.
1) I can leave my steerer as it is, with current extender ring below it and this replaces the stem.
2) I cut my steering tube so this sits flush on the bearings.

The second choice might look better, but I've shortened the steerer if it doesn't work.

it sounds like one issue with the extender, is that it is taller than you want to raise your handlebars.
is it possible, that for the (?small?) amount you wish to increase, a different stem would suffice instead?

a stem with a more vertical angle to raise the bars?

I have worked with a number of steerer extension devices. All have done their job and, if maintained properly, don't offer any issues for relaxed riding.

However most all these extenders have warnings about not using them for off road or trick riding. While these warnings are likely driven by the manufacturer's liability "department" they do serve to show that a two piece system will not be as strong/stiff/safe as a single piece.

I do see rise adjustable stems (with a hinge and some form of a clamp to secure the angle) coming loose and usually the rider hasn't mentioned anything when the bike is brought in for service. So my hope for proper maintenance is a pipe dream and not the absolute.

What was not mentioned is the need to have the portion of the steerer that spans the headset bearings be a single piece to insure bearing function/adjustment. Andy.

I have used the part the mentioned in post 2, it will be the piece you need.

it is internally fitted.. I got mine in 2008 in picture NB, all those spacer rings can be removed individually and ones

just the width of your stem used at a minimum..

you must order it from Europe (or Korea,as in 1st mention)
because the 1 US importer-distribution hub, In OKC, OK.. went out of business ..

wiggle.com | BBB BHP-20/21 Stem Extender | Oversize Stems

BBB is a NL company contracting with international source companies..

All of the "extenders" shown above are just intended to raise the handlebars or convert a quill stem steerer to take a threadless stem.

Are you trying to lengthen the steerer to use the fork in a larger frame? If so, there is no good way to do it that doesn't require a very good machine shop and probably brazing. I wouldn't do it with an Aluminum steerer in any event.

Thanks for all the input.

Thanks for the input everybody. I have tried many stems to get to my current configuration that I have been riding for some time. It is OK but I think 1-2 cm of additional bar height would be better and I would like to give it a try without spending much. The suggested item from Wiggle seems worth trying. They claim it will work with threadless headsets but I cannot visualize how the single through bolt will activate the expander (to hold the extender in the steerer tube) and at the same time set the headset bearings properly. I will ask Wiggle to explain. Hopefully they have a competent help desk.
Thanks again.

The Key is the Bolt, It is special Made for Producing the BHP... Google images may have a picture ..

The hex that pulls Up The wedge is in turn Internally threaded

and so the Deep Hex socket, 6mm, has a 6mm thread inside it..

Great find! I like that internal extender MUCH better than the external one pictured.

I actually had a question along the same lines. My LBS cut my steerer too short and now im trying to add two inches to the tube. I'm running a threadless Cane Creek headset and wanted to know if one of these would work for what I am trying to do.

It's essentially the same thing as a quill adapter right?

Cheers
