a little shock therapy needed here.
So I'm mostly a vintage bike guy. I like things simple. I have 4 road bikes and zero mtn bikes. Until yesterday.
Yesterday I aquired a trek 1999 7000 zx 18" mtn bike. The stock rockshox Judy has been replaced by something that's wobbly and hasn't anyplace to mount the v brakes to.
I would like to replace that fork as cheaply as I can. All in all the frame is in decent shape and the wheels and tires are too. Would a rigid threadless fork work? There's one on Craigslist for 20 bucks.
Also......any special tools needed to work on threadless headsets? Got to learn sooner or later, I have one on my Dawes.
I got the specs from bikeapedia.
1 1/8" threadless A Headset ST
And for the shock 'Rockshox Judy XC 3.15.'
Do I search for a shock that includes 3.15 and 1 1/8" in its description of specs?

The advantage of threadless headsets is they don't require any special tools for installation or adjustment.
Two things to think about when buying a used fork:
1. Head tube length. An 18" mountain bike is likely to have a fairly tall head tube. You'll need a fork with a steerer that hasn't been cut too short.
2. Crown to dropout length. Since you are replacing a suspension fork, you'll want a fork that has a lot of tire clearance under the crown. Otherwise you'll change your head tube angle too much.
