Changing crankset
I would like to change the Suntour XCC100 crankset off my Trek 3700 as the chainrings are riveted and I am looking for an inner ring smaller then the 28t that is on it. As an entry level mechanic, what am I looking at as far as difficulty? I believe the BB has to match up with the new crankset, right? The derailleur must be capable of handling the new chainrings, how am I doing so far? What else, any help would be appreciated. If this has been addressed previously, sorry for the repeat.

Bikes: Catrike 559 I own some others but they don't get ridden very much.

It's easily done but may require some special tools.
If you have a 28 tooth inner ring now, I suspect you have a 28/38/48 crankset. Typical chainring sizes for a more modern crank might be 22/32/44. If it was my bike, I'd install a new crankset and bottom bracket and see what happens if I lower the existing front derailleur a bit. If it shifts to my satisfaction, I'd leave it.
