What type of brake should I buy, and what should I measure?

I have a beach cruiser with no front brake. The only mounting hole I have, is a hole in the front fork. I am not sure what type of brake to buy. Caliper, U brake Side Pull... etc. Also what do I need to measure, to ensure the new brake will fit?

Thanks for your help.

Read this it will tell you everything you need to know about measuring. My guess will be long reach. This page will also tell you which brake might work for the reach you need.

Beat me.
You need to know the reach, which is the distance from the mounting hole to the sidewall of the wheel rim.
General info from Sheldon: Installing and Adjusting Caliper Brakes
You could go to the Beach Cruiser forum and ask what brakes folks have on their bikes and if they work well.

Same as the rear brake. If rear is a coaster/you don't need a front caliper.

Since brake reach is easer to say "needs measuring" then actually doing so properly I suggest where ever you get the brake you can return it for full refund or credit toward the exchange. Of course this is where the LBS comes into play. In fact if the bike were in front of them they could measure too. Andy.

Front and rear calipers are not always the same reach, especially if the bike was not speced with both to start with. Second, I highly agree with having a front brake, regardless of the rear brake style. Third, want and need are not the same. Andy.

If all your fork has to mount a brake is a hole in the crown, you won't be able to use U-brakes or cantilever brakes, since those require special mounting points brazed or welded to each fork blade. So, you'll want a caliper brake. Several people above have suggested ways to measure "reach," which will tell you the size of caliper you will need. Sidepull and centerpull calipers are deprecated these days, but dual-pivot calipers are readily available in various lengths and affordable from e.g. Tektro.

Also make the distinction between nutted and recessed style mounting of brakes before you buy one or the other.
