Bike Restoration

I might have the oppurtunity to visit a bike shop with a basement full of older bikes that have just been tossed aside. My goal is to get into cleaning and fixing up some older bikes. I want to start with some that would be easier to work on and expendable. Those would be my first bikes that I have really worked on. Then I would like to get into some others. I believe that there is a mix of Wal-Mart bikes and some older Schwinns for the most part. Is there anything in paticular that I should look for or stay away from?
