650c wheel in mountain bike

Is it possible to use a 650c (571mm) wheel in a mountain bike frame using the cantis for the original 559mm wheels?

It'll probably work. I used 26" mtb wheels on a 650C road frame (don't ask ... it was goofy), and the road calipers lined up ok. Your rims will be 6mm lower in the frame, and cantilever brakes should have enough adjustment. It won't be perfect, but I bet it'll work.

Good luck.

You will also have to use a 135mm axle and spacers rather than the 130mm of a road hub.

I was wondering this as well....I have a decent mtb and wanted to get a nice new 650c road bike in the coming year. It would be nice to have an extra set of really nice wheels; I was thinking of getting a set of beater wheels - maybe mtb wheels for strength - for everyday use on the road bike and using the stock or even an upgrade set for tours, events and what not. (I hesitate to say racing because that implies speed which I alas, do not possess in any sense.)

Wouldn't the rim track 6 mm higher (closer to the brake bridge)?

In the UK, builders make lightweight sport road bikes using MTB rims. You can get tyres down to 1" which is more practical for light touring than 650c.
