Canti/Vbrake boss size

I have to replace the bosses on the fork of my Salsa Chili con Crosso. I have not been able to figure out what size they are and Salsa has not returned my email yet. Also trying to put TRP cx9 brakes on and the current studs seemed to be a bit long and they had some play in them.

I took a picture next to a metric ruler if that helps

Most all canti/v brae bosses have the same (within very small tolerances) dimensions for the smooth pivot shaft portion. A threaded in place type, as pictured, can have different threaded portions but even here there are only a few common thread specs. Having said that some slop between the smooth pivot shaft and the bushing in the canit arm is quite common. Usually this slop is of no issue in use.

Salsa is owned and distributed by one of the largest wholesalers in North America I would be very surprised if a few LBS in your area don't deal with QBP. Since Salsa decided to work through a distributer and dealer network don't be surprised if they are slow to reply to a retail consumer. That's not their responsibility, the dealer you bought the bike from has that.

Here's a shot from the QBP on line site of a boss that very well might be the one you need. Part # FK4715. Andy

Problem is that I bought the bike used and it's no longer in production. Went to my LBS yesterday with bosses in hand and they did not have any to match. the threads are longer and skinnier than the ones on my Mtn bike, as i took one off to see if i could get lucky

Maybe i'll go ask Tom Hopper at CX Nat's this weekend when I go say hey to Jpow lol might as well ask a pro

You will need to measure the stud threads fairly accurately as they are made in numerous threadings. Off of the top of my head there are M8X1.25, M10X1, M10X1.25 and M10X1.5 and 5/16"X18 and likely others

Some times leaping past the Bike Shop does not help, as supply chain doesn't go like that.

A Bike Shop with a QBP Dealer account can order small parts and even whole 'Salsa' brand bikes ..

Since that is their, QBP's, Brand name..

The threads are 6mm wide and about 15mm long. why do they do metric and 1.25 of no units

edit: i did go to my bike shop and they did not have any in stock to match and the guy couldnt find anything in whatever catalog they had. I have other shops to try if i can't figure it out here or at the race this weekend ( might try SRAM neutral support too to pick their brain)

The units are in millimeters - diameter X pitch

If you have an LBS that is a Salsa dealer, it should be up to them to support their product. If they don't have it, they should get it for you.

Pretty sure none around me have Salsa's unfortunately.

Do they make a M6 brake boss or am i just measuring poorly? i haven't been able to find anything smaller than M8 so perhaps that is what I need

Well the Salsa rep online said they had no Chili con crosso forks around to verify what size boss it took.. which isnt surprising since they stopped making them 5 years ago.

2 bike shops could not find the M6 male and M6 female configuration in the length i have.

I finally found something that I HOPE is correct from a shop in germany that has vintage stuff and found the M6 bosses were used for Magura brakes back in like 99 so i ordered 2 sets and keeping my fingers crosses it will be right. If not then I have a friend who is willing to give it a shot on his machining lathe

When I had an unrelated problem with an old mountain bike this summer (details here), and I was looking for the smallest diameter bosses I could find, the M8x1.25 was the best I could do looking through the box-of-junk at the LBS near my family.

Trying to match up the bolt to the ruler in your picture, I came up with M6 x 1.0 mm. May be better to measure and use a thread pitch gauge, though.

we did a test at one of the shops with a m6 x 1.25 but was not the same length and it threaded ok. hoping the pieces come from germany soon so i can get back to using that as my winter bike.
